No adoption event this weekend due to the Memorial Day holiday, so we decided to check in with some of our Alumni pups. Frankie (formerly Twix, above) and Joey (formerly Reeses, below) were two pups from Cece’s Halloween litter. All six puppies and the mama dog were adopted via Badass. Today, the puppies are nearly seven months old and adored by their loving families (you can see why - lots of personality with these two). Remember, adopting a young puppy often requires more time, training and resources than adopting an older dog. Tell your rape jokes. Expect to be challenged on them.

Seems like every 6 months or so - maybe once a year - there is a debate about rape jokes. Here’s how it goes:

A dude tells jokes about rape or deals with hecklers in way that includes rape. A woman hears these jokes or is the heckler. She publicly states that she is upset or didn’t like the joke or didn’t think it was funny or doesn’t think that particular joke really dealt with the topic seriously. And then the comic somehow takes that feedback & uses it to LOSE HIS MIND.

Other comics get on board & support the comic. For some reason a discussion about censorship breaks out, which really makes no sense since the audience member isn’t really in a position to censor anyone. Dude comics generally support the other dude comic’s right to tell a rape joke, without realizing rights weren’t being questioned, choices were. Chick comics support the dude comic or keep quiet - not wanting to be labeled stupid or bitchy or against their own community. Female audience member is labeled stupid or bitchy & publicly shamed by comics. Everyone moves on.

I personally don’t advocate for any topics being categorically off limits, because OF COURSE I DON’T. I’m a comic. I have talked about rape on stage. I do think, though, that when a comic is in a group of people largely unaffected by a topic, that comic should be able to do some extra work to make their jokes funny, relevant, well thought out. If you are a white comic talking about dealing with racism, or a straight comic talking about being uncomfortable in a gay neighborhood, or a dude talking about rape, you are asking for higher scrutiny.

You also get a greater reward - you get the built in laughs that come with chatting on a taboo topic. And there are plenty of angles on rape that affect dudes more - no one has ever thought I could possibly BE a rapist for instance, which is an angle I have heard dude comics use for huge laughs & it totally worked. There are always new jokes to tell on a topic or new angles to take.

IN THE END: tell the jokes you want to tell. But know that it makes you a better comic to have to either ignore criticism or defend yourself. This is the rest of all of our careers: success balanced with ignoring criticism or self-defense.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, though, if you, a dude comic, take a woman’s response to your rape joke & yell over it or call it censorship or persecution. If you say she couldn’t take what she got into. That she should know better. That she brought it on herself. When you do that, fine comic, you become just another dude ignoring a woman saying no.

Wilma Flintstone is an approximately 9 month old feist mix from North Carolina. She landed in the shelter with her siblings, Barney (adopted!) and Betty Rubble - all Badasses now! She weighs about 20- 25 lbs. and is all about play. Wilma’s curious and fun, but also a true sweetie who’ll happily plop in your lap when she’s tuckered out. Wilma would be great for an active adopter who’ll show her off.

These awesome photos are from the 2013 Weston Sand Sculpture Festival on the sandy shores of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. Each year the festival has a different theme and this year’s theme is Hollywood.

“Since the festival started in 2006, themes have included Fairy Tales, The Continents of the World, Under the Ocean, Great Britain, and The Jungle. What began with two Dutch sand sculptors building a giant King Kong from 30 tonnes of sand has now turned into a world famous get-together of some of the niftiest hands in sand sculpting.

More than 20 of the world’s greatest sculptors from nine different countries are working away using 4,000 tonnes of sand from the beach.”

The festival opened on Good Friday and runs through the end of September.

Isabella Rossellini is an approximately 7 month-old beauty from Alabama that weighs about 23 pounds. She was skittish and scared in the shelter but blossomed into a Badass in foster care. She’s still shy at first, but a ton of fun once she warms up! Great with other dogs and cats, Isabella loves a good snuggle. NYC friends call her “a funny little beast! Very puppy-ish!” She likes to burrow under the covers to sleep and wake you up with a little nibble. Cute as a button, Isabella’s one bat dog who’ll surely steal your heart.

It’s time for a Tuesday edition of Badass Buds! Kyra is such a gracious foster sister, she lets 7lb Maarten win their wrestling matches. Kyra has played hostess to some dogs her size, and now her family is helping out Badass by fostering 10 week old puppy, Maarten.

Maarten’s fosters report, “He is polite about food - sitting quietly until you place it in front of him. He is not possessive of toys and prefers squeaky to non-squeaky. He will play fetch and likes chew toys, especially antlers. He is mostly pee pad trained - he gets less careful when extremely excited or tired. He is affectionate, and likes to sleep on people, but is not a lap dog. He gets along great with my dog and is not aggressive towards my cats (I don’t consider barking after being hissed at to be aggressive). He has lots of puppy energy and loves to play with my dog and people. He also seems pretty smart, so will need good training and stimulation to keep him challenged and happy.”
